Dahmes Stainless, Inc., located in New London is excited to invite motivated students to join our 12-week manufacturing apprenticeship program to increase their knowledge and skills in the manufacturing industry. 

 

Begin your career by working alongside other experienced welders to transform sheets of stainless steel
into complex drying systems for our customers across the US and Canada, and gain a general understanding of important life skills to support you in achieving a successful career.

what it looks like

Up to five students will be selected to join this program for the summer of 2022. If chosen, students will be at the Dahmes' campus from 7:00am-12:00pm four days/week with potential for optional afternoon hours. Individuals will receive a competitive hourly rate with the opportunity to potentially join our team at the close of the summer.

Week 1: June 6-9

  • Classroom: Dahmes Founding Story and R&D Center Tour (Alex)

  • Classroom: General Shop Safety

  • Classroom: Welder/Grinder Safety

  • Hands-on: Intro to Stainless Steel 

  • Hands-on: Intro to TIG Welding 

Week 2: June 13-16

  • Classroom: General Safety Review & Assessment

  • Hands-on: Machine Overview & Safety 1 

  • Hands-on: TIG Welding 

Week 3: June 20-23

  • Classroom: General Machine Overview & TIG Skills Review/Assessment 

  • Hands-on: Machine Overview & Safety 2 

  • Classroom: Process Engineering 101 (Hans)

  • Classroom: How to Create a Personal Budget 

  • Hands-on: Tools 101

  • Hands-on: TIG Welding

  • Hands-on: Box Competition
     

* Participants who successfully pass weld test may have the opportunity to work additional hours (up to 40) at the discretion of the Apprenticeship Program Instructors.

  • Classroom: Project Management 101 (Trevor)

  • Classroom: Reading Blue Prints & Drafting 101

  • Hands-on/Classroom: Intro to MIG Welding 

  • Hands-on: MIG Welding

Week 5: July 5-8

  • Classroom: Basic Geometry/Math/Measuring (Jeremy)

  • Hands-on: TIG/MIG Welding 

  • Classroom: Teamwork/Punctuality (Janae)

  • Classroom/Hand-on: Piping 101 (Jeremy)

  • Hands-on: Utensil Caddy Competition

Week 6: July 11-14

  • Classroom: Grinder Safety Review 

  • Classroom: How to Set Goals & Achieve Them (Janae)

  • Classroom/Hands-on: Grinding & Polishing

  • Classroom: Rigging 101 (Jeremy)

  • Hands-on: TIG/MIG Welding 

  • Mid-program Check-in

Week 7: July 18-21

  • Classroom: How to Advance in Your Career 

  • Hands-on: Role Shadowing 

  • Classroom/Hands-on: Shearing/Fit-up/Tack 

  • Classroom: Tube Saw & Purge Welding 

  • Hands-on: Purge Welding

Week 8: July 25-28

  • Classroom: Utilizing Your Personal Strengths

  • Hands-on: TIG/MIG/Purge Welding - Top Hat Process

Week 9: August 1-4

  • Final Project: Personal Firepit - Design (Jesse)

Week 10: August 8-11

  • Hands-on: Role Shadowing

  • Hands-on: Shipping & Receiving (Jeff)

  • Hands-on: TIG/MIG/Purge Welding

  • Final Project: Personal Firepit - Design

  • Classroom: Controls/Automation Engineering 101

Week 11: August 15-18

  • Classroom: Interview Skills (Janae)

  • Hands-on: Role Shadowing

  • Final Project: Personal Firepit - Welding

Week 12: August 22-25

  • Final Project: Personal Firepit - Welding

  • Hands-on: Role Shadowing

  • Field Trip (Jeremy)

  • Graduation

 

* Participants who start school during the final week will have the option to complete the program the week of August 15.

requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Steel toe boots required for all time in shop ($75 allowance will be provided); all other tools and supplies will be supplied by DSI.
